Guide: questions you should deal with before buying an oven thermometer

What is an oven thermometer and how does it work?

Between a perfectly successful, inside still slightly pink-colored roast and a dry and tough piece of meat often lie only a few degrees. To have an overview of the exact oven temperature at all times, oven thermometers are used.

Oven thermometers measure the internal temperature of the oven and thus give the exact degree number of the baked goods. This can be desired, among other things, when cooking at low temperatures or with poor baking results.

However, an oven thermometer is also recommended, if the oven is older and an inaccurate temperature display. Some ovens even have only subdivisions of heat level, which is why a Thermometer with a degree display is useful.

To use an oven thermometer correctly, it must either be placed in the oven with the baked goods or attached to the outside of the oven. It is important to note that the Thermometer is at the same height as the food. Because the temperature of the oven can vary greatly depending on the height.

Oven thermometer and frying/meat thermometer are not the same, as they measure different things.

An oven thermometer must not be confused with a roast or meat thermometer. Roasting thermometers measure the core temperature of the meat, and not that of the oven.

Is an oven thermometer suitable for a wood oven or Pizza oven?

In principle, oven thermometers are also suitable for Wood / Pizza Oven.

When buying an oven thermometer, however, care must be taken that the heat resistance is sufficiently good. If oven thermometers are used for a wood oven, these high temperatures are exposed.

Average oven thermometers can withstand up to about 300°C. In a pizza oven, however, it can quickly become over 500°C. Thus, more heat-resistant high-performance thermometers must be used.

How exactly does an oven thermometer measure?

The accuracy of an oven thermometer depends heavily on the model and type. Digital thermometers are generally more accurate, but also cost more than analog oven thermometers.

Oven thermometers deviate a maximum of 10°C from the actual heat of the oven.

As a rule, an oven thermometer deviates from the actual value by a maximum of 10°C. However, the measurement in the right place is of enormous importance. The Thermometer must be placed at the same height as the food to be able to specify the exact temperature of the baked goods.

In general, however, it can be said that more expensive models also provide more precise temperature data. However, all oven thermometers give more details than the oven itself.

Which types of oven thermometers are there and which one is right for you?

A distinction is made between the following three types of oven thermometers:

  1. Analog Oven Thermometer.
  2. Digital Oven Thermometer.
  3. Digital Radio Oven Thermometer.

In the following, we explain the different types and the respective advantages and disadvantages. With this, we want to help you to find the most suitable oven thermometer for you.

Purchase criteria: based on these factors you can compare and evaluate oven thermometer

In the following, we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate oven thermometers. This makes it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective device.

In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Measuring the core temperature.
  • Fastening.
  • Material.
  • Timer function.

Below you can read what is involved with the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a device based on the criteria or not.

Measuring the core temperature

Oven thermometers serve – as the Name says-to measure the oven temperature. However, there are a few models that can additionally measure the core temperature of baked goods.

This includes most oven thermometers with radio. However, such models are much more expensive. However, they are worth buying if the exact temperature of the food in the oven is important to check – for example, when cooking a roast.

However, thermometers can often only specify one temperature display at a time. Therefore, you can see either the oven temperature or the core temperature.

Oven thermometers can either be placed in the oven or hung or attached to the outside. It mainly depends on the type of thermometer where it is positioned.

Digital (wireless) oven thermometers are hung on the outside of the oven door and are thus uniformly designed.

Analog oven thermometers should be positioned as close to the baked goods as possible to obtain an exact temperature specification.

Analog oven thermometers, on the other hand, are put into the oven. These can be placed on the sheet, or hung with a hook or suction cup.

Whether hanging or setting up, it is important to note that the Thermometer is at the same height as the baked goods. Thus, the Thermometer will provide a more accurate temperature indication of the food.

If the oven thermometer is placed, it should also be positioned as close as possible to the baked goods. The stand must be stable when using thermometers.

An oven thermometer should be hung but rather, it must be noted that a hook is included, which can be positioned. It is an advantage with the hanging thermometers that they lie directly on the oven disc and the temperature can be read very well.

If certain materials are preferred, care must always be taken to ensure that this heat can be withstood and put into the oven. So it matters whether a Thermometer is made of steel or plastic.

The majority of the analogue oven thermometers are made of bimetal and therefore very heat-resistant. These can, therefore, be easily put into the oven.

Digital (wireless) thermometers, on the other hand, are made of plastic. Only the sensors are made of precious metal. These, in turn, can be easily put into the oven due to their heat resistance.

Timer function

Timer functions help to ensure that the roast does not fall into oblivion even after several hours in the oven or the oven gives a notification when reaching a certain heat.

Only digital and digital radio oven thermometers contain such timer functions. These either give a beep when a certain temperature is reached. Or you release an Alarm when the baked goods have to be taken out of the oven.

Are oven thermometers waterproof?

Some oven thermometers are waterproof, but it depends on the type and model.

Most analog oven thermometers are dishwasher safe, as they have no electrical components and are made of waterproof stainless steel.

If your analog oven thermometer is not dishwasher safe and water is deposited behind the display window, it will evaporate again by the heat during the next baking process – so do not panic.

An oven thermometer does not have to be washed in the dishwasher, because it does not come into contact with the food anyway. If the core temperature is additionally measured with digital oven thermometers, the probes are made of stainless steel, which is waterproof and washable.
